Metairie, Jefferson Parish’s largest community, is located on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain between New Orleans and Kenner. 'Metairie' is the French term for a small tenant farm that paid the landlord with a share of the produce, also known as sharecropping. Many of the area’s earliest settlers were sharecroppers.
Metairie’s Veterans Memorial Boulevard is a center of commercial activity. The concentrated area of commercial businesses along Causeway Boulevard is considered the business district of Jefferson Parish’s East Bank.
Right on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain is "Bucktown." Formerly a small fishing village, it is now a thriving community featuring some of the best seafood restaurants and markets in our area. Be sure and catch the sunset at the Bucktown Marsh Boardwalk.
